Introduction
Iran has always been one of the main energy players in the region and the world due to its vast oil and gas resources. However, the requirements of sustainable development and preventing the negative consequences of climate change due to excessive use of fossil fuels and other anthropogenic activities have made it more necessary to pay attention to renewable energies and environmental protection.
In addition, the excessive development of agriculture without considering the volume of renewable water resources and the lack of proper management of urban and industrial wastewater have brought the quantitative and qualitative status of these resources to critical levels in many parts of the country. Considering the need for integrated management of water, energy, food, and the environment, and in accordance with the mission and roadmap of universities for the sustainable development of the country, and in order to consolidate activities in the fields of energy, water, and the environment at Sharif University of Technology and organize research institutes, the Sharif Energy, Water, and Environment Institute was established in 2010 by merging the Sharif Energy Research Institute, the Institute of Water and Energy, and the Institute of Biotechnology and Environment with the creation of an independent statute approved by the University Board of Trustees.
